Celebrated every year on April 7th, World Health Day commemorates the founding of the World Health organization in 1948. Each year the celebration aims to create awareness of a specific health theme that highlights a priority area of concern for WHO. This year’s theme is our planet, our health.
How to Get Involved in World Health Day 2022
1. Educate Yourself on Health Inequalities
Perhaps the best way to get into the root cause of this movement is to educate yourself on health inequalities around the world and find ways to work towards global health equity. After all, this is the entire point of WHO, and is an essential step in achieving a healthier world.
2. Make This the Year You Grow Your Own Food
Plants are one of our best friends when it comes to overall health. Studies have shown that plants can reduce inflammation, strengthen our immune system, lower blood pressure and improve digestion.
Why not make this the year you grow your own food or you could choose to buy from a local organic source. This is what we recommend you start with:
- Leafy greens: like spinach, kale, celery
- Beans: like edamame, soybeans, kidney beans,
- Berries: like cherries, blueberries, strawberries
- Seeds: like pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds
- Avocadoes (who doesn’t love some avocado toast)
3. Take Part in Clean-Up Activities In Your Community
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 30% of all global deaths are attributable to environmental factors. While it might seem futile, making small changes in your community will reduce your impact on our planet’s health, and in turn your health.
Along with getting involved in clean-up activities, you can also start recycling at home, make your own compost, and invest in re-usable, recyclable products.
4. Make a Small, Healthy Change to Your Routine
According to WHO, health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It’s easy enough to say we are taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle, but how many people are actually making those steps count?
Making healthy changes doesn’t need to be overwhelming or costly. Every small change takes you one step closer to better well-being. Perhaps you start going for a 30 minute walk every second day or you aim to increase your water intake by 2 more glasses per day – it’s these small changes that make a big difference in the end.
Many countries also participate in World Health Day on April 7th with public events and other activities to raise awareness about health issues that affect our global population. Why not find one in your region and visit.
5. Donate and Volunteer
The human race and the world is experiencing a lot of suffering right now, and every little act of kindness goes a long way. Simply being there for others in times of need, means a lot more than we might know at the time.
If possible, find ways to volunteer at local centers in your community, even if it’s just once a month. You could get involved in community outreaches or donate items to local charity shops every few months.
