Understanding the Herpes Outbreak Stages

Herpes is categorized into two types:

herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2)

Anyone infected with herpes might show no symptoms at all or the symptoms will appear in stages

The Prodrome Stage Symptoms include:

• Red, itchy or burning skin • Painful urination • Fever • Headache • Swollen glands

The Blister Stage Symptoms include:

• Small red bumps • Pus-filled blisters • Fever

The Ulcer Stage Symptoms include:

• Red or pink wounds that   ooze fluid or bleed

The Healing Stage

Healing takes anywhere from 2 – 4 weeks. The ulcers will scab over and there may be some residual itching in the affected area.
